Sammi Hanratty can been seen playing the adorable lead character in HBO's original film An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong, which is now available on DVD. Hollywood Teen'Zine recently had the chance to catch up with Sammi to find out about her role in the popular American Girl film series.
What influenced your decision to become an actress?
The thought of being able to play all different kinds of characters is what made me want to become an actress.
How did you become involved with the American Girl franchise?
I became involved with American Girl when I auditioned to play Chrissa and booked the role.
Were you a fan of the American Girl dolls before you landed the role of Chrissa?
Yes, definitely. I love the idea of having the dolls of the characters in the books. It's learning valuable lessons and about our history in a fun way.
Tell us about your character in the film.
My character, Chrissa moves to a new town and has to start at a new school. She tries making new friends, but instead gets bullied by the "mean bees". Chrissa has to find the strength and courage to stand up to the bullies.
In what ways can you relate to Chrissa?
Both of us stand up for ourselves and our friends. We also both love animals and swimming too!
What was your favorite scene to film?
I loved every scene with the llamas because they were so cute!! Especially the baby.
Were there any funny moments on set?
Shelby (Jayden) and I went to the bathroom one day and she was pretending to be a ninja. She kicked one of the bathroom doors, but didn't know there was an older lady inside. It was really funny, but probably not for the lady, because she was really scared.
How does it feel being the face of the 2009 American Girl of the Year?
It's such an honor to be able to be part of the American Girl Franchise. It's crazy to see a doll made after my character It's so cool to see other girls holding Chrissa dolls!
Do you own any American Girl dolls? If yes, which ones?
I have Mia and Chrissa. I really want Samantha. I'm heading to Thailand to do a movie for 7 weeks, so I'm hoping she will still be available when I get back.
Name one actor or actress that you would like to work with?
I would love to work with Amanda Bynes. She seems really nice and down to earth and I love her acting.
What can we look forward to seeing you in next?
I have a movie coming out in November. It's a Robert Zemeckis film, "A Christmas Carol" starring Jim Carrey, Colin Firth, and Robin Wright-Penn. I can also be seen recurring on two tv shows. I play Jen Gerhardt on "The Unit" and Young Chuck on "Pushing Daisies"
