MEET IDENTICAL TWIN SISTERS KATE & KACEY, NASHVILLE’S HOTTEST NEW COUNTRY ARTISTS ON THE RISE!

If you thought the Olsen twins were a dynamic duo wait till you meet Kate & Kacey Coppola. These identical twins have just started their journey down the road of the country music industry and are enjoying every second of the ride. Kate & Kacey grew up in Denver, Colorado as just your normal, everyday, teenage girls. At the age of 18 they moved to Los Angeles to go to school where music sparked their interest. They began learning how to play the guitar and started dabbling in song writing. After a while they decided to have some fun playing their music at different venues throughout the thumping LA night life. The girls met singer/songwriter Jamie Johnson during their time in LA and he helped them get their foot in the back door of the country music mansion, Nashville. Taking his advice, the girls moved to Tennessee three years ago and have been pursuing their music vigorously since then.
Kate Coppola is different from her twin despite how things might look. When we talked to her she described herself saying, “I’m older by nine minutes and I’ve just always been type A, more organized and I always plan and everything.” She described her physical style as separate from her sister too, wearing their hair differently (Kate likes hers curly, and often puts it up more than Kacey does) and noting that her face is a little rounder.
Their physical and personality differences aren’t the only way to tell the twins apart. When the girls perform on stage Kate usually does the instrument playing. Kate also loves writing music. She often writes songs and then lets her sister look them over and tweak them so that it has a personal and a general view.
Kacey Coppola may be the younger twin by nine seconds, but she portrays anything but that. Compared to her sisters structured personality, Kacey is considered the “free spirited” one. “She is more laid back than I am, which is good,” Kate said of her twin. Kacey also tries to differentiate her physical appearance as well in order to help people identify who is who. “I will wear my hair straighter, just to help people out,” Kacey confessed. The girls’ opposite personalities and traits keep them balanced, and is a major aspect in what makes them such a dynamic force in their music career. They truly bring the best of both worlds to the table to create new fresh ideas for their music.
Kacey & Kate differ in many ways but it is also their similarity in their passion for their music which makes them strong. They may have not come from a musical family with ties and connections like many artists today, but the girls have worked hard to get their names out there. Kate & Kacey were eager to give us a glimpse at the inside the story of their first record deal. “You always hear those stories about walking into a record label, singing and then getting an offer to have a deal right on the spot, but a lot of times you hear stories, like Alan Jackson who was turned down by everyone before he got a yes. That's pretty much what happened to us.” The girls didn’t make it an overnight trip the top, in fact they had to work hard and push the hundreds and thousands of hopefuls to get there. “Nashville No,” the girls told us describing the term they came up with after being turned away so many times in the beginning. “They don’t say yes, but they don’t say no - it’s like a ‘well come back again and play us some more songs.’” The words themselves are enough to make anyone want to give up, but that was not the case for the Coppola's.
After many trials the girls finally got the answer they were looking for. “We ended up going to Scott Borchetta’s office at Big Machine Records,” they explained. “We’d never met him before and we were expecting this scary Italian guy, and Scott walks out and he’s just quiet. We were supposed to have 15 minutes with him and 2 ½ hours later we were still singing songs and talking. At the end, he just looked at us and said, ‘Well, I’d love to work with you girls if you’d like to work with me.’ We looked at each other and we were like, is this a record deal, are you being serious? It was so surreal.” In case you are one of the few who don’t recognize the name “Big Machine Records,” they are also the vehicle behind the success Taylor Swift.
Since signing to Big Machine Records, their music has been practically putting itself out there. Their debut single “Dreaming Love” has been climbing the charts. Kate & Kacey were really excited about the song saying, “It’s a song that is really close to us because when we wrote it, we’d been going through a kind of dark period where we were just feeling down about a lot of things and being negative. Where you’re scared to make a move because you were unsure what was going to happen next. And that’s how a lot of people are right now. Our friends are going through the same thing, like will I have a job tomorrow, where am I going to live; all of those things. It’s a song about taking chances and about falling in love an about not letting the negative stuff get you down and just live your life Dreaming Love, being positive.”
Kate and Kacey also finished a music video for the song. The music video has been successful, and was just put right into rotation on CMT. The girls had a blast making the video, shooting it from a ten story tree house and fields of tall grass. They recently had the opportunity to work with some pretty big names in the music industry, going on tour with Little Big Town even before their debut single hit the airwaves. “When they were just starting out someone gave them the same shot so that’s how they felt with us,” the girls said about going on the LBT tour. “They actually watched Can You Duet and were fans of the show. It was the most perfect way to get our feet wet with a tour.” The girls traveled all over the U.S. playing shows in Las Vegas, Seattle and Spokane.
Right after the tour ended Kate & Kacey made their debut at the Grand Ole Opry. “When we got the call that they asked us to be on the Opry, we freaked out. We jumped up and down for like five minutes,” they exclaimed. Performing at the Opry allowed the sister duo to share their music on a whole new level. “We met Pete Fisher, who’s the manager at the Opry, and he’s turned into a great friend!”
While the record is being tweaked with final touches, fans can purchase their six song EP through iTunes. “The greatest compliment and the most rewarding for us is when someone comes up and says your songs are the soundtrack to my life. Because they’re the soundtrack to our life and if we can share that with someone else and make them feel the same way, then that is why we keep doing it,” they shared. With all of the upcoming things that they have to look forward to with the release of their debut album, these twins are staying pretty busy trying to have fun as they focus on the work ahead.
When we asked the girls what the best advice was now that they have embarked on this big journey they told us, “I think when you’re a new artist it’s hard for you just to sit back and enjoy the process and not get too caught up in everything. With some of the people who have been in the business and seen the ups and the downs and lived through them, they just tell you to relax, what’s going to happen is going to happen, just enjoy it, and only control what you can control, only worry about what you can control, which is when you walk into a room and meet people, that’s what you have control over, but you don’t have control over anything else and let that go. Martina (McBride) told us just take it one day at a time and try to enjoy each day.” And that is exactly what they are doing.
