CLIQUE GIRLZ ARE ABOUT TO POP OUT IN STYLE! (By: Bessie Sorge)
The Clique Girlz may have had a rough start at the beginning of the year when singer Ariel Moore left the band, but now they are back and ready to take on the world with a brand new album in the works, a possible summer tour and a brand new member to take along on their journey. The band, now made up of sisters Destinee and Paris Monroe, and the newest addition to their “clique,” Sara Diamond, recently took a break from recording their album to talk with Hollywood Teen'Zine about their latest projects. Keep reading to find out about their journey and what we can expect to see from them in 2009.
Lets start from the beginning. At what age did you start singing and when did you decide you wanted to make a career out of it?
Destinee: I have been singing since I’ve been in diapers - at like two - but when I really knew that I wanted to sing, I was probably about seven.
Paris: I was always brought up with music and I always loved listening to music. It was always something that I couldn’t get away from, and I was just addicted to. I‘ve been around music my whole entire life, but I think that I knew that this is what I wanted to do was probably when I was like seven.
Sara: I started singing also when I was real young and Destinee and I - she told me once before - that we’d like bang on the piano, not together, but we’d both bang on the piano and like sing along and stuff. It was kind of like a progression because I always like to sing and it was always a passion of mine, so as I got older I wanted to become more serious. I don’t know at what age, probably around eight or nine or older, younger.
How did you come up with the name Clique Girlz?
Paris: When we decided to form the Clique Girlz my mom was like, “if you guys are going to be a group, then we need a name.” So she went ahead and typed like six pages of names and there was like five million and the last one was “clique” and we were just like, “oh my God, that’s so cool.” So, we looked it up in the dictionary and it meant a close circle of friends - usually meaning three - and then we added “girlz” to make it more feminine and I we just liked that better.
Sara, how did you first hear about the Clique Girlz and what drew you to audition for the group?
Sara: Well, I found out about them I think through YouTube - because I was just searching out videos and I saw one of theirs - and I was automatically drawn to them. They are so amazing, and even at such a young age they have accomplished so much, and they have such great voices, and such great stage presence. I found out about the audition through a friend. Then I flew down here and then the rest is history, I guess.
Destinee and Paris, what was it that solidified your decision to bring Sara in as the new Clique Girl?
Destinee: It was just amazing, because a soon as she walked in the door we just knew, because she has that light on her. She was so amazing at singing and performing. She was just amazing and (had) a great personality and she’s just awesome.
Paris: She has it all. So it was just kind of meant to be. We just clicked well with her. So, yeah that was pretty much it.
Each of you has a special symbol and color that represents your style. What is the story behind that?
Destinee: My symbol is stars. When I was younger I had this thing in my eye and my mom got all worried. She took me to the eye doctor and the doctor was like, “oh, it’s just called a star.” So that just stuck with me ever since. I was like “I love stars.”
Paris: My symbol is a princess crown because ever since I was a little girl I always thought that when I grew up I was going to be a princess. I always loved them and I always thought that were a great fashion statement, and I always loved wearing them and I thought they were really cute.
Sara: My symbol is a red heart. First of all, I love to draw hearts. I’m very sensitive, and I am very trustworthy, and I love being around people, and I love friendship and stuff so that heart symbolizes this.
Let’s talk about your new EP called INCREDIBLE. Do each of you have a favorite song on the album?
Paris: Since it’s just an EP there’s not many choices. There is only three songs and my favorite one is actually one that I wrote. I know that sounds kinda conceited, but I really like that song and, of course, I wrote it. It’s just very legitimate with me because it’s something that I wrote myself, and it’s called “Brag, Brag, Brag.” I really love that song.
Destinee: And she actually produced it with Rodney Jerkins. So, that was really a big deal. It was the first song she that she wrote and got to do it with Rodney Jerkins.
Paris, you co-wrote the song “Brag, Brag, Brag,” working with writers that are responsible for numerous number one hits for The Jonas Brothers, Pink, and Demi Lovato, what was that experience like working with them?
Paris: I also co-produced it. It was amazing working with Rodney Jerkins because we are actually from the same neighborhood and we always used to talk to him - it was in New Jersey - and five years later, we actually ended up working with him. So, it’s kind of funny.
How does it feel to have a song that you wrote be a part of something as huge as The Olympics?
Destinee: It was just an amazing experience to have our song on the Olympics’ sound track. It was really cool because we got to do this music video for it that we had to play these characters - like basketball, soccer, track - it was just a really cool music video, and we got to do different things. It was a really fun experience.
Do you have any plans to record a full length album soon?
Paris: Yeah, that’s actually coming out probably sometime this year, but we’re still working on it. We’ve been writing a lot of songs, and we’ve been working with a lot of producers. So, expect to hear a lot of new stuff coming out soon.
Tell us about your involvement with Baby Bottle Pops.
Paris: We had a meeting with the TOPPS Company and they just really loved our energy. It was kind of a good match because we are obsessed with candy and we really love the product. We always were eating it since we were little kids. Well, we are little kids, but I mean really little, like around five and six. We’ve always been eating Baby Bottle Pops. They just wanted something new and something fresh. I guess we kind of match the Baby Bottle Pops because we are really colorful. They really liked that. We performed for them in their office and they were like, “wow, this is going to be awesome. You guys got to record the jingle. We’re going to do this.” We ended up getting a two year deal , which is pretty huge. The Jonas Brothers actually did it last year and they got a year contract, so it’s pretty cool and pretty honoring.
Sara: We actually went to New York to film the commercial and it was such an amazing experience. It was so much fun and it’s actually coming out today.
Each of you have such a unique style and when you step out onto the red carpet you have some of the most fun and colorful outfits. So explain your styles.
Destinee: Well, we are all three are feminine with an edge. We always say that because we like to be girlie in a way, but then we like to rock it up and like throw in some cool edgy outfits. I am more the rocker chick, so I like a lot of the Vans t-shirts and we all like to wear heals. It’s kind of fun.
Paris: I guess you can say I’m a little bit more girlie than the other girls. I’m more feminine and kind of couture - like a pop princess, I guess.
Sara: In a way, we are still trying to figure me out. I love those one-of-kind pieces - kind of retro. I love Urban Outfitters, like the Highway stuff, like those cute cardigans, like funky jewelry, like the very one of a kind pieces that not a lot of people are wearing.
What is your favorite place to shop for clothes?
Destinee: I love Nordstrom. It’s like the best place to shop because it’s so organized, and I love the shoes section. I’m obsessed with shoes. It’s really there.
Paris: Well, there is this really cool place here in Los Angeles; well, actually it’s in West Hollywood. It’s called The Grove. It’s my favorite place in the world. You have got so many options and all my favorite place are there, like Fresh and Abercrombie and Fitch, Nordstrom. I just love it. Yeah, that’s my favorite place ever.
Sara: To be completely honest, I don’t really have like one favorite store. I love getting different things from different places. But, I’m from Canada so you probably wouldn’t know a lot of the stores that I like. Maybe. Have you heard of Zara? I love Zara. I love H&M, Urban Outfitters. Just stuff like that.
