How is the weather out there?
I’m in L.A. for the weekend and it is awesome. I’ve been in Vancouver for a while and we had rain for like three weeks straight and I was like, “I could use a day of sunshine”.
How does that work with the production schedule? Do you have to shut down production when it rains?
You know, they just improvise and they make it work; movie magic.
Can you tell us a little bit about your character, Dan?
He is a good ole southern salt of the earth guy. He was born and raised in Memphis where the show takes place. I think people from that part of the world are just real direct and earnest people, and they are no BS. That’s how he lives his life and that’s why I really like him. He is best friends with Marti, and also recognizes that they are probably soul-mates. He sort of followed Marti to this Lancer’s cheerleading world from a distance and gets integrated and gets to know Savannah. He’s charmed and taken by her because they are so different. Now on the show there is sort of a perilous question, which is always, “Should I follow my heart with my soul-mate? Or should I give myself to the moment and kind of explore this new adventure?”

It’s interesting how the Savannah/Dan/Marti storyline is playing out right now. A lot of stuff was revealed in last week’s episode where Dan’s first time just happened to be with Marti in the back seat of a car. And here Savannah is getting ready to give all of herself to him when she finds out about the history between Dan and Marti.
That’s gets even more complicated as you learn more about Marti and Dan’s (history) and some other things that kind of haunt them. Something happened when they were young. It describes why there’s this distance between Dan and Marti and why they’re kind of fear-based to maybe be together. But as that stuff begins to be revealed to Savannah, because inevitably it’s going to come out, and as she realizes it, it creates this huge rift between her and Marti, and obviously between her and Dan. The drama gets complicated, baby.
What do you think it is about this show that has the ability to draw the viewer in?
I just think it is a specific world. It’s like this insulated world there at Lancer and that instability of Memphis and of college. I think everyone, whether you’ve lived it before or you’re in it right now, you know that world. It’s fun to kind of live vicariously through those people and their overly dramatic lives. Whether the characters are likable or con-trivial, you care about them for some reason. You want to see them grow and evolve and see how they change in life.

So, are you rooting for Team Savannah or Team Marti?
This is a good question. I’m torn! You know, I feel like there is kind of a destiny with Dan and Marti, and Dan knows it. It’s hard to deny that destiny, but there’s something so appealing and alive about Dan and Savannah. I like how they complement one another. I like what she brings out in him, and I kind of like what he brings out in her. I don’t know, man I can like already see their kids or something.
Would you go as far to say that Savannah has changed Dan in some way?
Yeah. Dan had that thick-skinned defense mechanism up, where he lived life in a kind of superficial way and didn’t really want to allow anyone in. I think that Savannah has kind of cracked a hole in his shell and we see some vulnerability in Dan, and that’s scary, but it’s also fantastic. He realizes how engaging it can be to really invest in someone. And to be a part of something, I mean, that’s what we all want. And I think she sure (brought) that to Dan.

Is there going to be any change in the dynamic between Dan’s friendship with Lewis?
Definitely! It’s sad because Dan and Lewis had just created this sort of mutual respect for one another, and they are both dudes. That just starts to fall apart as the trust is compromised. To realize that some guy has been in with your girl before, it’s hard to see past that. So, there’s definitely a break in the chain between Lewis and Dan.
Your character is like the only non-cheerleader in the central group of the show. Do you ever have to go through any of those practices with the rest of the cast?
Thank goodness, no. They have to work their butts off. I’ll show up for moral support because I love the camaraderie of the team. Those guys just work their butts off on the weekends, late at night or in the mornings. I think I’m the luckiest guy on the show.
We talked to Aly Michalka right before the seasons started. She described how much work actually goes into portraying a cheerleader and that she now has a newfound respect for the sport. Do you feel that way now even though you are not involved in that aspect of the show?
A hundred percent! I had no clue what it was like. My experience was playing football in high school and that was a cheerleader was to me, there on the sideline. They are the most like trained overall athletes that I’ve ever seen. You know, they are like gymnasts/dancers/cheerleaders/ninjas. They are in incredible shape and they can really do it all, like the strength, agility, endurance and acrobatics. It’s amazing. And Aly and Ashley they have to work a lot with them. They do have stunt doubles, but they also do a lot of that themselves and I think they make it look pretty good, so.

They have to do all the dance moves.
Yeah! It’s just no wonder they are in such good shape because they are just dancing their butts off every day.
There has been a lot of great music incorporated in the show throughout it’s first season. Fefe Dobson makes an appearance on tonight’s episode and in an up-coming episode BrokeDown Cadillac will be on the show, and even Aly Michalka has jumped on stage and performed. What do you think of the music of the show so far this season? And what are some of the bands you are currently listening to?
Well, my favorite thing about television is the music of TV because I think it like drives the emotion of the story a lot of times. I love the music on Hellcats. There’s this guy I’m obsessed with, Ryan Bingham, he actually won the Oscar this year for the Crazy Heart Soundtrack. Every time I listen to him; he takes me back home to Texas. I’ve met him a couple of times and it just transports me back to my home. I love it. I was actually listening to that right before you called me.

Did you get to work with Fefe Dobson?
I was in a scene,(but) I didn’t really interact with her. I got to hear her sing. She’s got some mad skills. And I made it real clear to her that I was single, so we’ll see if that evolves into anything. No, I’m kidding.
